NYC Orders Lighter Crane Loads After WTC Accident

New York City is ordering contractors to lighten the weight carried by cranes across the city on the heels of an accident at the World Trade Center last month in which a crane cable snapped, dropping thousands of pounds of steel 40 stories and crushing a flatbed truck, according to DNAinfo.com.

Until investigators determine why the TG-1900 tower crane at 4 World Trade Center suddenly dropped the load of steel beams, the city’s Department of Buildings is asking all contractors with similar cranes to use only up to 75 percent of their capacity.

The Department of Buildings, the Port Authority and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the accident.
