When One Crane is Not Enough

Construction projects are greatly helped when a crane is present to do heavy lifting on the job site. But what if the size of the project is larger than what one crane can handle? Bring in a second crane, correct? Maybe a third? How about six cranes for one project?

Axel Springer is the largest digital publishing company in Europe, headquartered in Berlin, Germany. Their publications include Bild, Die Welt and Fakt tabloids and newspapers. Construction began on their new 13-story media campus building in 2016 which, when finished, will have approximately 52,200 sq. meters (171,264 sq. ft.) of floor space, accommodate up to 3,500 employees and feature an atrium 30 meters (98.5 feet) in height. Completion is expected in December 2019.

The campus footprint is large enough to require the service of six Liebherr luffing jib tower cranes for tasks including transporting concrete, fitting steel, façade installation and unloading of trucks. Nearly all of the lifting will be done by four 357 HC-L 18/32 Litronic and two 280 HC-L 12/24 Litronic cranes.

The larger 357 HC-L cranes each have a tower height of 77 meters (253 feet), radius of 50 meters (164 feet), and hook height of almost 130 meters (426 feet). The smaller 280 HC-L cranes each have a tower height of 58 meters (190 feet) and radius of 40 meters (131 feet). All six cranes are positioned so that together they completely cover the worksite.

As a cost-saving measure, the cranes are mounted to the building’s foundation, and the external cranes will disassemble the interior cranes when their work is completed. Total work time for the cranes will be two years before being sent to other jobs.
