Update Powerline Decals on Cranes

Some power line warning decals on older cranes may no longer be in compliance with the 2010 OSHA Cranes & Derricks regulation. According to a report given during SC&RA’s Safety Education and Training Committee meeting held last week, decals citing the old “10-foot” rule should be removed and replaced with newer, more accurate decals. If old decals are left on cranes, the committee warned this could become a citation issue in the event of an OSHA inspection.

The meeting was held in conjunction with the Crane & Rigging Workshop in Philadelphia, Pa., hosted by the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association.

The committee advised crane owners to contact the manufacturer to see if newer crane decals were available.

Topic note by Sims Crane:
Electrocution remains the most common cause of heavy equipment operator fatalities in the United States, accounting for more than 1 out of every 4 crane operator fatalities.  When working around powerlines, ensure all team members are aware of lock out/tag out procedures and incorporate those policies into a well rounded lift plan.  The outdated 10' rule for powerlines has been revised to account for factors that may cause current to arc in excess of the 10' space.  The link below offers great insight into planning your next lifting operation when powerlines, gas lines and other utilities are involved.
