Terex's New Superlift 3800 Has Big Shoes to Fill

Terex Cranes announces the launch of the Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane. As the successor to the Terex® CC 2800-1, it has big shoes to fill. When the CC 2800-1 was launched, it established a new benchmark in the crane industry, and became the reference in its class. An entirely new crane, every single aspect of the Superlift 3800 has been improved in relation to its predecessor: From performance to safety features and from transportation to efficiency and speed of erection. The result is a crane that is built for the way our customers work, to lift their heaviest loads as well as help their profits.

“This is a very important launch for Terex. Improving on an already great crane, we created a completely new one by leveraging our customer driven innovation process which combines our experience with a focus on solving the needs of the customer. And this illustrates perfectly what Terex Cranes is about,” says Kevin Bradley, President Terex Cranes.

From the start of the project, customers were involved in the development of the Superlift 3800. On this basis, features available on the CC 2800-1 were improved and new ones added.
Regarding safety features, the Superlift 3800 comes with the unique Terex Cranes Fall Protection System, winner of the 2012 ESTA Safety Award. Additionally, a protective railing has been installed around the superstructure. The new cabin design provides a larger view area, and available side outriggers equipped with hydraulic cylinders and pressure sensors allow the operator to monitor ground pressure when mounting or dismounting long main boom lengths.

When it comes to performance, capacities have been improved around 20% overall in comparison to the predecessor. “When we started this project, we set ambitious goals”, explains Hans-Peter Franzen, Project Director. “And I am proud to say that we exceeded them.” System rigidity has been improved, for example the light extension LF can now lift loads up to 178 tonnes. The Superlift 3800 can be delivered with an integrated wind kit in a universal main boom system : the crane is capable to erect wind turbines of 117 meters without using the the available superlift boom configuration. An assist crane is not required to help erect the main boom.

A great crane is a profitable crane. All aspects regarding erection and transportation are designed to provide the highest return on investment. Despite considerably higher rigidity, Terex managed to reduce the weight of the basic machine by 17 tonnes improving the crane’s transportability. Moreover, the measurements and the weight of components have been designed for ease of transport, including additional hoisting points on components including central hoisting points and hydraulic motors positioned within the track frame reducing transport size and preventing them from being damaged during transportation.

The Superlift 3800 is the first crawler crane to feature our new cabin design. Providing operators with the best working environment, it was developed with extensive feedback gathered from customer workshops, leading industrial stylists and experts in ergonomics in order to create the best crane cabin in the market. The result speaks for itself – and pays for itself, too, through enhanced safety, comfort and efficiency.

The Superlift 3800 conforms to both, the European norm EN 13000 and the US standard ASME B30.5. It can lift a maximum load of 650 tonnes at a radius of 5 to 12 meters and the maximum load moment accounts for 8426 tonne meters. The crane is available for order now.
