CCO Brian Ellis is at the helm of his 175 ton all-terrain crane on a Wednesday in Orlando. He and Oiler Danny Arnold are on their first job for the day. They’re tasked with lifting and placing portable modular classrooms into place at Moss Park Elementary School on North Shore Golf Course Boulevard. Modular Building Systems International (MBSI) is a Winter Garden based company that produces prefabricated buildings. Today, MBSI hired Sims Crane to do the heavy lifting.

The 100 foot-boom towers over the classrooms already in place at the school. The classrooms that are being installed must be placed in sections. Half of the building is installed on slabs. Then the second half is lifted from a trailer and set next to the first half. At that point, workers finish the building, making sure both structures are plastered together.

The buildings are constructed in a factory-controlled environment. MBSI then delivers the structure to the site where it’s installed on footings or slabs and then finished. All buildings are constructed in accordance to international, state and local building codes. In addition, these modular buildings offer clients key advantages such as the ability to deliver a finished building in about half the time of a site-built project, easy relocation and cost efficiency.

The neighborhood where Moss Park Elementary School is located is experiencing a population explosion. According to a report commissioned by the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce, the more than 164,000 East Orlando residents live in one of the country’s fastest-growing suburban areas. It is home to a steady supply of quality housing. The community has blossomed into a desirable location for residential and commercial growth thanks to the education and technology industries.
