Orlando’s Citrus Bowl is a popular place in December and January each year. In addition to being the home venue of the University of Central Florida Golden Knights, this year it also hosted the 2011 FHSAA Football Championships on December 9th and 10th. In preparation for the crowds, several crews have been busy preparing the stadiums turf, restroom, concession stands and sound systems, and also making sure the stadium structure is safe for attendees.
Although UCF’s season and the high school play offs are behind us, there will still be large crowds in the stadium soon with two upcoming bowls – The Champs Sports Bowl on December 29th, 2011 and the Capital One Bowl on January 2nd, 2012 so it’s essential that this job is completed timely, but with safety first and foremost on everyone’s mind.
Recently, concrete inspectors were checking galvanized steel plates that transfer motion from the horizontal beams to the vertical beams. There are more than 200 in the stadium and each way more than 200lbs.
As part of the upcoming plans to renovate the stadium, these plates need to be inspected individually to make sure they are secure and performing properly. If not, they are marked with spray paint to make the follow up crew aware that they need more work. If they are more than 40% loose, they are tied with yellow straps to ensure they are safely in place for now, but will need more attention in the future.
