This week, alumni of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Sarasota program donned blue surgical booties before making their way to the Courtyard Tower construction site for a campus improvement update from Sarasota Memorial President and CEO Gwen MacKenzie and Skanska Vice President Richard Redmon.

This Drill was No Disaster

To be prepared in the event a disaster strikes, Sarasota Memorial, general contractor Skanska, the Sarasota County Fire Department, Sarasota Police Department and the Government Emergency Operations Center teamed up to conduct an emergency drill March 16. The location of the staged disaster was the site of the new Courtyard Tower. In the drill scenario, one of the construction cranes “fell,” causing damage and injuries. Hospital staff, Skanska and rescue personnel tested their ability to evacuate and treat the mock victims. The evacuation of about 80 construction workers took less than four minutes, and emergency officials praised the hospital and construction team for a safe, coordinated response. Skanska Celebrates Safety

Skanska, general contractor for the Courtyard Tower and Vertical Expansion projects, celebrated 107,153 accident free man hours (90 days) with a Safety Employee Appreciation BBQ.

The Shape of Things to Come

It’s easy to see the new Courtyard Tower beginning to take shape in the photo above. When completed in 2013, the patient care tower will have nine state-of-the-art floors replacing the oldest parts of the hospital.

Dueling Cranes

Even from the back of the hospital, you don’t have to crane your neck to see all of the equipment used to construct our new Courtyard Tower. The pair of cranes, pictured above, play a big role in the building of the nine-story structure, scheduled to open in 2013.
