The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) will hold its 2012 Financial, Insurance & Risk Management Forum on Nov. 14-15 at the Villas of Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla. The forum will include sessions on topics of interest to key executives engaged in specialized transport, crane and rigging services. One hundred industry executives are expected to attend sessions about improving business operations while cutting costs.
Sessions include:
Risk Pool Management—Controlling the Hidden Healthcare Costs Within Your Insurance Plan. Randy Johnson, senior vice president, Hays Companies, will explain how risk pool management enables employers to see their plan structure from a higher level so that it can be appropriately assessed. He also will examine how risk pool assessment allows employers to understand the real drivers of healthcare costs, remove the mysteries of renewal pricing, and control the escalating costs of a medical plan.
Background Checks 2012
Patrick Martin, partner, Littler Mendelson, will discuss why many employers are finding it challenging to check prospective employees’ backgrounds because of the intersection of federal and state laws regulating the use of information such as credit reports and criminal records in the hiring process. He will review best practices and provide recommendations to help mitigate the significant legal risks in this area.
Common Risks—Practical Threats
Alan Ashlock, president, Crane Rental Corporation; Jay Folladori, vice president, heavy & specialized, Landstar Transportation; John McTyre, COO, McTyre Trucking; and James Robertson, president, Allegiance Crane & Equipment, will provide a timely update of real-world risks and threats to efficient, safe, and profitable operations. This panel of SC&RA member principals will discuss the unique issues that face the crane, rigging and specialized transport industry today and pose potential hurdles and threats for tomorrow.
Control Exposure and Manage Costs Using Your Insurance Policy
Robert C. Moore, chief legal officer, and James Jinhong, senior vice president underwriting, NBIS, will examine how the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance, Safety and Accountability program can result in inspections and citations that increase insurance premiums; how companies can plug gaps in coverage to control the cost of doing business; and how NBIS’ proven contract checklist can assist in managing risks and maximizing profits.
Wellness Programs & Strategies in Our Industry—Seriously?
Melissa Tobler, RN BSN, vice president, health strategies, national practice leader, Hays Companies, will provide valuable information on understanding the needs within a workforce, evaluating health insurance costs and trends, planning wellness programs and evaluating program data. Industry-specific case reviews will provide an understanding of how to maximize effectiveness of wellness initiatives.
Crisis Communications & Practical Implications
Bruce Cordingly, principal, Sound Counsel Communications LLC, will present a crash course on assessing risk, developing a crisis communications plan and engaging the media on the internet during a crisis. He also will discuss the Crisis Communications Preparedness Program developed by Sound Counsel exclusively for SC&RA members.
Lessons from Hell...Practical Implications of Dealing with Crisis
James Lomma, president, J.F. Lomma, Inc., will detail the aftermath of the collapse of a tower crane owned and leased by his company in Manhattan, New York. Two workers died in the accident, and he was tried both in the media and the New York Supreme Court. On April 26, 2012, he was found innocent of all charges. His story sheds light on crisis-related topics such as business and family pressure, financial implications, and industry precedent.
A special pre-forum session starting early November 14 is open to SC&RA members only, entitled, Successful Financial Strategies for Your Specialized Company. The program will examine the findings of the SC&RA 2011 Financial Benchmarking Study, which was completed in August 2012. The study provides a “snapshot” of the unique specialized transport, crane rental and rigging industries, allowing participants to compare their company to others of similar size and type. This session, will be facilitated by Mike Whitlock, Tannian Consulting, Redmond, Wash., who has worked with SC&RA on past Financial Benchmarking Studies. This enables Mike to not only analyze this year’s data but point out new trends in industry operations and expenditures. Key areas of focus will include strategizing balance sheet and income statement management, improving cash flow, refining sales goals and growth strategies.
