Custom-made Indoor All-Terrain Crane Delivered by Grove

Grove has delivered two 110-ton GMK4100 All-Terrain cranes custom designed for low headroom work to a German rental company. The new cranes are designed especially for working indoors – in low headroom situations and tight industrial spaces. The two GMK4100S were built at the request of German rental company Dornseiff.

The GMK4100S has a shorter, 117 ft. boom in place of the standard, 170 ft. boom, (the GMK4100L has a 197 ft. boom) with a retracted length of just 28 ft. and the same number of boom sections, each of which has been shortened. The crane also features a shortened telescope cylinder, taken from the 140-ton GMK5130-2, which allows loads of up to 55 tons to be telescoped.

The crane performs surprising well at low boom angles, handling 35 tons at 26 ft. radius with the retracted boom horizontal, and up to 4.5 tons with the boom fully extended to 118 ft.

The crane also features a tilting boom nose with hydraulic pinning to improve under roof reach and a new compact hook block that further reduces the headroom required. The hook head can also be attached directly to the boom.

The GMK4100S has a carrier length of 35 ft., which combined with all-wheel steering make it highly maneuverable. The four-axle crane can also be configured with a Gross vehicle weight of 44, 49, or 53 tons, making it ideal for easy movement by road.

The cranes, which are based in Wetzlar and Olpe, went straight to work tandem lifting a 90-ton machinery press at a 21 ft. radius, inside a manufacturing facility with just 33 ft. of headroom.

Grove All-Terrain crane product manager Andreas Cremer said: “Designing a 110-ton crane for indoor use presents a lot of challenges but it gave us the opportunity to design something unique. We know the standard GMK4100 is a very capable crane and so our experienced engineers got to work adapting it. We’ve made a lot of specialized design changes and created a compact machine that doesn’t compromise on strength.”
