The regional events for the CIC Crane Operator & Rigger Skills Competition began this month and will extend into November. The hosts of the Fall 2014 regional events include activities for families, open houses, and vendor showcases. Regional hosts will sponsor the travel and hotel expenses for the finalists to compete at the Championship.
The CIC Crane Operator & Rigger Skills Competition is designed to underscore the need for safe crane operation. As the only crane operator recognition program of this scale in North America, the event provides a venue for the best crane operators to set the bar for all crane professionals.

Northeast Regional: Oxford, Mass., Oct. 25
Operators in the Northeast are hosted for the second year in a row by Cranes 101 and Woods CRW on Oct. 25, 2014 in North Oxford, Mass. The event will take place at Woods CRW’s North Oxford, Mass., crane rental yard. With music, food, and games for all ages, the family-friendly event is sure to be a great time for operators and their families.
Featuring products and services from vendors such as MagidGlove and Norfolk Utility Truck Service, the event is also an opportunity for crane fleet managers to get the latest information to help them with their jobs. Regional media, including New England Construction and Hard Hat News will also cover the event.

For more than two decades, Cranes 101, Bellingham, Mass., has offered an extensive variety of construction safety training. Courses range from certificate training to operator licensing. Cranes 101 is a national training company with the ability to train at on-site locations, and have recently added online courses.
West Regional: Bakersfield, Calif., Nov. 15
Operators in the West will compete Nov. 15, 2014 at the Bakersfield, Calif., training facility of Crane Service Industries (CSI). The event will be in conjunction with an open house, activities for families, and vendor displays from crane and rigging equipment suppliers. Sponsors include PCL Construction and Coast Crane. Lunch will be provided to the crane operator competitors and their families.
CSI offers crane training classes nationwide and open enrollment courses twice monthly at its California headquarters. The company features three instructors who are Cal/OSHA certified for mobile and bridge crane inspections, qualified as rigging trainers by The Crosby Group, and offer authorized CIC practical examinations.
Competition standards and scoring for the Crane Operator & Rigger Skills Competition are designed by Crane Institute Certification and administered by CIC Practical Examiners. The competition includes three crane operation challenges to assess precision and depth perception. Scoring is weighted 80% on successful completion of the course. Crane operation will be on a telescopic boom crane with minimum 70-foot booth length.
An additional 20% of the overall score assesses the operator’s knowledge of basic rigging principles, including inspection and selection of appropriate rigging. The rigging portion of the competition is designed by Columbus McKinnon Corp.
