Sims Crane and Sims HD team up for this mega-move across Florida. Moving this massive transformer across road and rail involved multiple tandem lifts with 2 x 450 ton class cranes on both ends of the project, railroad transport across 3 counties and a 3 mile road transit by self-propelled transport with 112 tires. The escort caravan included several Sheriffs officers, lineman crews and FDOT escorts to block intersections, direct traffic and watch for overhead obstructions.
The project began at the storage yard where a 550 ton Grove GMK 7550 and a 450 ton Tadano ATF400G loaded the transformer onto rail cars for transport to Archer, FL.
Arriving in Archer, the transformer was offloaded from the rail transport using the twin Tadano ATF400G all terrain cranes and loaded onto two Goldhofer self-propelled modular transports (SPMT) with a bridge attachment.
Using the SPMTs the Sims HD crew moved the transformer 3 miles to the nearby substation where the twin Tadano cranes placed it onto a concrete pad.
